2010 Colorado Federation of Garden Clubs Annual Meeting Join the Northern District of CFGC for The Great Awakening of Spring Saturday, June 5, 2010 - First Evangelical Lutheran Church 803 3rd Avenue, Longmont, CO Come one – come all! Choose what you want to do! We have an exciting day planned for you with a variety of programs for you to choose how much or little you want to participate. We have Council, Executive Committee, and Annual Meetings scheduled. We will have two special educational programs on CFGC programs/projects we hope someone from your Club will be able to attend. In addition to all of that, we’re having four general interest, educational programs, as well as a short walking tour to a historic home and garden. Please come join us here in Longmont for this year’s CFGC Annual Meeting! 7:30 a.m. Registration Begins 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 am – Opening Ceremony 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. 9:00 - 9:25 Gardening Study Consultants Council Meeting – Kathy Petersen 9:30 – 9:55 Judges Council Meeting – Joy Kancir 9:00 - 9:50 Membership Growth – 12 Ideas that Work– CFGC Educational Program –Jessie Boyer, Past President CFGC, will be highlighting twelve ways in which CFGC Clubs can promote the benefits, programs and advantages of membership in a Garden Club. Gardening to Attract Butterflies – General Program - A Butterfly Pavilion Educator will be giving us tips on how and what to plant in our gardens so that we can attract more butterflies. 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. 10:00-10:50 Outside the Box - CFGC Educational Program - Think different and unusual when it comes to civic projects. Small and non-traditional civic projects can make a big impact in your community. Gail McKee, Northern District Vice President and former publications specialist with CSU Extension will lead this roundtable discussion on what has worked for your club or on getting ideas for new and different kinds of projects. The Zweck Aviary - General Program – Even if you missed the tour, you can share in one of the many delights available on the historic Zweck Farm. Dr. Peter Hartlove has documented over 60 different kinds of birds on Gayle’s family farm. He has been taking photos for over 30 years starting with wildflowers. His trip to the Galapagos Islands changed his focus to birds. He has taken two trips to Alaska to photograph eagles and has spent an extensive amount of time photographing birds on the Zweck Farm. 11:00 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. Colorado’s Notable Trees - General Program A tree may be considered “notable” if it is a champion or remarkable in some way, or related to a famous or historical person, place or event. Native trees are considered notable if they are remnants of original forests, old growth stands or survivors of catastrophic events such as wildfires. Come hear about the more notable, largest and beautiful trees Colorado has to offer! Kathleen Alexander is the City Forester for the City of Boulder. She has both a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Biology and a Master of Science degree in Forest Management from Colorado State University. Kathleen is active in the Colorado Tree Coalition. She coordinated the Champion Tree program for five years and now serves as co-chair of the Insect & Disease Committee and is a member of the Notable Trees of Colorado calendar committee. She is both knowledgeable and passionate about the most impressive trees our state has to offer. 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Luncheon and National Awards Only 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. 1:00 – 1:25 Environmental Study Consultants Council Meeting – Elfriede Goeben 1:00 – 2:00 Walking Tour of the Historic Callahan House Gardens and Home - General Program Participate in the open house activities and tours being offered for the day at this notable historic home lo- cated directly across the street from the meeting facility. 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. CFGC Annual Meeting for all attendees – Doris Duckworth 3:00 p.m. - 3:50 p.m. Beneficial Insects - General Program Learn to recognize the insects on “pest patrol” in your yard and garden, and how to attract and keep those that are beneficial around. Carol O’Meara is a gardening enthusiast in Boulder County, Colorado, where she works as a Horticulture Entomologist for Colorado State University Extension. Her gardening columns appear in the Longmont Times-Call, Longmont Ledger, Boulder Camera, and Loveland Reporter-Herald. Each person will be responsible for paying their own way for either Friday or Saturday nights or both. Lodging Options GUEST STAYS are being provided by members of the Northern District who are inviting you into their private homes to spend the night (or two or three) during the meeting. It will be a great way for you to save money, as well as make new friends. (Special note: Guest Stays may require driving 30 to 40 miles each way from the actual meeting site.) Anyone interested in using our “Guest Stay” program during the time of the Landscape Design Critics Tour and the Annual Meeting should fill in the form below the meeting registration form.
